New York City currently has a compost program set up through the New York Department of sanitation consisting of seven partner organizations around the city. This allows you to drop off your "organics, food scraps and yard waste" to be composted at these seven sites. You can find out more about the project and its partners on the DSNY Community Composting page.

If you are interested in the laws and requirements for commercial organics collection, please visit the DSNY Commercial Organics Requirement page. Certain businesses in NYC are required to separate organic waste. However, this does not necessarily mean that all organic waste will be composted.

As part of the One New York plan, Mayor Bill de Blasio has included a goal for New York City to go Zero Waste to Landfill by 2030. Included in the plan are efforts to improve recycling and composting to increase waste to landfill diversion rates. Though there are also efforts to decrease waste to energy (incineration) the overall zero waste goal only includes zero waste to landfill. For more information check out the complete One New York guide (page 176 for Zero Waste).

For more information on organics collection in your neighborhood please visit the NYC Organics Collection Program page and input you NYC Address Information to see if your building collects organic waste.
