About me and the site

My name is Lilly Ferris. I am 23 years old, originally from the Bay Area, California now living in New York City. I am an alum of the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University with a minor in Environmental Studies. I served as the President of EarthMatters, an environmental advocacy club and worked as the Student Engagement Coordinator at the NYU Office of Sustainability during my time at NYU. Over the past few years I have become increasingly interested in waste and compost in particular. As I began to dig deeper into composting and recycling at NYU I realized how immensely complicated waste is. I realized that there is a huge lack of transparency and a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to waste and especially composting and industrial composting. Other students, friends and family often ask questions I have had and continue to have myself that I am not always able to answer. My intention for this website was to create a guide for composting at NYU and lower Manhattan. After working on this I can say that I still have questions myself and not all of my questions were granted ideal answers. Composting in New York City and at NYU is a work in progress and certainly has its flaws. Hopefully this website can point you in the right direction and prompt you all to keep asking questions and demand more efficient compost systems!
