Action Carting
Action Carting is one of the largest waste hauling companies in NYC. They collect waste from NYU, Think Coffee and many other businesses and institutions in Manhattan. Their responsibility begins at the curb. Though Action is one of the few waste management services that collects organics waste, where that waste actually ends up is unclear. Information regarding the final destination of organics waste collected by Action and any details about organic waste management is absent from their website.
When I visited Action Carting's Material Recovery Facility I asked about compost collection and organic waste management. Christian Morgan, Director of Recycling operations answered. When they receive bioPETs they can sell them as they would traditional PET plastics while food scraps are sent to "Waste Management" in New Jersey or an unnamed "pig farm." As for biodegradable bioplastics, it is unclear where they end up- likely landfill. Matthew McPeak. Senior Account Manager said that Action is working on building their own industrial compost facility but is not sure when that operation will be complete. Overall, it was difficult to get clear, complete answers about composting at Action.
