NYU's organic waste is collected by Action Carting. The organic waste is collected from faculty housing, dining halls and businesses on campus such as Starbucks on West 4th Street and Argo Tea. There are also a few small scale composting operations such as the ones at the Community Agriculture Garden and the Steinhardt Urban Farm Lab.

NYU struggles with contamination of organic waste which leads to some of it ending up in the landfill bound waste stream. Aramark, NYU's dining provider is in charge of back of house and front of house organics collection in dining halls. Back and front of house organics are combined and placed curbside for Action to pick up.

Composting at NYU has a long way to go but there are folks looking to make improvements in organic waste management at NYU!

Be cautious about our waste streams and make sure you are properly sorting your waste and reading the fine print to avoid contamination and keep organic waste out of landfills!
